About A LINK Internship
In their junior year, students are paired for three weeks with professionals who provide real world experience in their fields. Students complete academically rigorous projects at their internship sites, culminating in a LINK Exhibition. You are able to choose any career you would like to experience for the LINK internship but encouraged to choose one you would like to pursue. Throughout these 3 weeks you can get a super close inside look at what said career is like. It is very helpful in deciding if you want to purse your initial idea of a potential career or if it's totally not for you.
What I did...
My LINK Project
For my LINK Project I decided to create a google slides presenting everything I did and learned. I have a slide of just information explaining the things I used. Then I have pictures and descriptions of the things I did along with an explanations of why and how I did it. Click on the photo to the right to open the google slides presentation.

My LINK Reflection
One of the most important skills I already had coming into link was just having a sense of color saturation and duration. I have been practicing coloring my own hair for the past couple years so I knew how to saturate the hair with color that would not leave it patchy. I also had a sense for how long you would leave on a semi permanent hair color compared to a lightener or permanent color.
The most important skill I learned during the link was how to part hair quickly and efficiently. While putting any kind of product on hair you go through all of it in small sections. The sections usually need to be straight and you can’t spend too much time going through and creating them. My mentor taught me a couple techniques and tricks to do it very well and it will always be a very handy skill.
I grew through challenges during my internship simply by persevering and talking to my mentor. Practice really does make perfect but if something wasn’t working for me I would talk to my mentor and she would show me another technique or give me tips to change whatever wasn’t working out.
Being able to have an internship experience, especially in a career you are interested in pursuing, is very important. It gives you a sense of the exact kind of work you're doing, what your schedule could be like and so much more. It's an amazing experience that ultimately leads you to pursuing or denying said career.
My internship has confirmed that I want to pursue this career, I had a bunch of fun and I learned a lot. I know I want to continue doing hair and nails and become more educated on the services. My next step would be going to a cosmetology school. Although I only learned about hair color during my internship I am very interested in doing nails too. I want to get more education and get certified so I can make money of the industry.
